Container shuttle in Houston

Intelligent solutions are set to make their debut at the Port of Houston, where DB Schenker also processes many of its shipments.

To reduce vehicle congestion and cut the number of trucks operating in the catchment area of the port in the US state of Texas, researchers have developed a container shuttle system that travels autonomously on a separate electric rail. The Port of Houston Authority and the designers of the “Freight Shuttle System,” which was developed at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, are currently working toward implementing the project that would ultimately also lead to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.

According to current plans, the shuttle would accommodate shipping containers and semi-trailers and be used to link two port terminals across a distance of five miles (eight kilometers). For the most part, the shuttle would follow the existing freeway. The Port of Houston on the Gulf of Mexico plays a vital role in the oil and gas industry, for example. It gained further significance when the expanded Panama Canal was opened in mid-2016. DB Schenker operates one of its main Oil & Gas competence centers from Houston.
